Welcome to my oft-neglected website! I teach courses on Japan and Asia at the beautiful California State University, Monterey Bay. My research tends to focus on social histories of Japan and the Pacific (especially social movements against militarism and, increasingly, I’m interested in food). I completed my dissertation in history at UC Santa Cruz, where I had the good fortune to work with amazing scholars like Alan Christy and Noriko Aso. I’m also an associate director of The Okinawa Memories Initiative (formerly The Gail Project), a collaborative humanities project that is centered on the early years of the American military occupation of Okinawa.

I’m a serious traveler and hiker, lazy triathlete and cyclist, and crime drama addict. Some might say I spend too much time thinking about what I’m going to cook for dinner.
